www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJK_zG… I found this video about selective mutism and though that it would be of interest to you all. I think that the people in it describe sm pretty accurately.

Hope you're all well.

I didn't know there was a group for this. I haven't been on DA for about a year now, and I hadn't even thought about searching for it here. My younger sister has Selective Mutism and I recently found a blog on Tumblr so I got curious and decided to search here, and lo and behold I found this one.

She was diagnosed with it in second grade when the teacher found it odd that she wasn't as responsive as she should have been at that age. She just turned 16 three days ago and while she had been making great progress, all of the work she has been given in high school (and a couple of teachers who hadn't bothered to read the letter of her psychologist explaining her condition) have caused her great stress and she has suffered two panic attacks.
I hope to show her that this group exists so that she knows that she's not alone and lift her spirits up. She doesn't draw, but she does write.

I stopped talking for a while, when I was fourteen. Just stopped. Everything in my life had gone to hell and I was teetering on the edge of the end. Everybody seemed to take it for granted that I was silent. There was no surprise. They thought I was too far gone. That resigned acceptance, it was almost worse than the pain itself...the fact that most everyone had given up on me.

Sometimes it's better for people not to understand, to press you for words. Because that means that you matter.

Do you ever get it where, just cos you don't talk, you don't behave like a normal teenager, and you cry easily, people treat you like you're about 3? Other kids talk about sexual or more "adult" things as though they think I have no idea what they're talking about, and I get adults saying things like "Can you read OK?" and "Do you understand what this means?" It annoys me. I mean, I'm not an A* grade student by any means, but I'm not an idiot.

Well, I'm not a teenager anymore.^^; But I have expereinced that to a degree yes.(= I think that you have to be the bigger person to a degree, and not let the ignorance of those around you get to you too much...

How long have you had sm if you don't mind me asking? (=
